Then, in September of 2023, Urbano Aletti's great-grandson moved the store his family founded onto its first ever technology system, and longtime customers joked that they never thought the day would come when Harrison Supply entered the 21st century. ## The contractor who wanted paint closer to hand Urbano Aletti ran a contracting business called Aletti & Sons, and what he wanted was easier access to hardware and paint, so he did what a contractor does with a problem and built the fix himself. Plenty of other people around Harrison wanted that same easier access, the store thrived, and Urbano passed it to his son Roy Sr., who in turn passed it to Matthew's uncle, Roy Jr. It is a family business, and the family takes great pride in that. ## Two world wars and nearly twenty presidents Over more than a century in business, Harrison Supply has outlasted two world wars, nearly twenty presidents, and the arrival of the car, the television, the home appliance, the computer, the internet and the mobile phone. Ask Matthew what carried the store through all of that and he does not point at any of the inventions. He points at the store's connection with its customers, and he is particular about the wording, because customer service has drifted into meaning a help desk closing a ticket as fast as it can, which is close to the opposite of what happens on Harrison Supply's floor. Someone walks in to replace a light bulb, repaint a room or remodel a kitchen, and whatever they came to find, they are usually a little nervous about the problem they are trying to solve. The job, as the Alettis understand it, is to connect with that person as an individual and as a member of the Harrison community, ease the worry, and help. That was true a hundred years ago, it is true today, and Matthew will tell you it will be true a hundred years from now. ## The long, polite no Which is why, for decades, the answer to every point of sale pitch was no. The family had looked at plenty of systems, going back to when computers first became mainstream, and none of them ever looked like enough of an improvement to justify the work of adopting one. Even as point of sale vendors became the preferred choice of wholesalers and co-ops, Harrison Supply held out, on the grounds that the systems on offer were clunky and slow and got in the way of the one thing the store was best at. > "I had always pictured a point-of-sale system as a large computer screen standing between me and the customer, which is why I preferred handwritten tickets that let us talk face to face." ## Three things that changed the answer Rundoo was unlike anything the Alettis had seen, and three things won them over. The first was speed, because Matthew's biggest worry about every other system had been how long everything took, whether the culprit was a confusing interface or software that dragged, and everything Harrison Supply does in Rundoo moves quickly. The second was that Rundoo runs on a phone, which turned out to be the answer to the screen he had spent years refusing. Staff check customers out from their hands, face to face, so the store gets ease, speed, accuracy and human connection in the same motion, and the same phone also handles inventory lookups, ordering and analytics. The third was transparency. > "I have never been comfortable hiding behind a computer when the customer cannot see what is going on." Every product the staff scan shows up on the card reader, so a customer can verify the order themselves before they pay, and afterwards the whole record sits in a Customer app where they can look back at everything they have ever bought from the store, pictures of the items included. ## The morning nothing broke After a couple of meetings, the decision was made. Rundoo worked with the store's main hardware vendor to set up EDI integrations, which meant product information stayed current and orders could go out from inside the system, and once the configuration was finished the team had time to get familiar with it before a go-live date went on the calendar. Nick and the Rundoo team came out to Harrison in person to make sure the transition went smoothly. There were nerves the night before. Then everyone got up the next morning and it worked, with every product, customer, vendor and historical sale sitting right there in Rundoo where it belonged. ## What a century of holding out was waiting for > "Our staff love it, and our customers love it, so what more can you ask for?" A store that has lasted long enough to watch the car, the television and the internet all show up did not need software to prove it could endure. What it needed was software that would get out of the way of a conversation, and once that existed, more than a century of holding out ended in a couple of meetings. Matthew's advice to other independent owners is to go and look for themselves, and if they have questions, to pick up the phone and call the store in New York. ![Matthew Aletti](https://pub-5247264bd04e4ebeaecbbedb3bebb9f8.r2.dev/static/images/clients/harrison-supply-owner.png) Matthew Aletti Owner, Harrison, New York Share this story [← All client stories](/clients/index.md) Suppliers & partners [Benjamin Moore](/partners/benjamin-moore/index.md) Ace [Orgill](/partners/orgill/index.md) ## Recommended reading [![Ordering from Bradley Caldwell, PACOA, and your farm-and-home distributors](https://pub-5247264bd04e4ebeaecbbedb3bebb9f8.r2.dev/static/images/articles/pos-for-bradley-caldwell-pacoa-dealers-thumb.png) ### Ordering from Bradley Caldwell, PACOA, and your farm-and-home distributors How farm, feed, and pet-supply stores that buy from Bradley Caldwell, PACOA, Wallace, and Orgill turn distributor ordering into a search and a scan instead of a portal and a clipboard.](/insights/pos-for-bradley-caldwell-pacoa-dealers/index.md) [![Net-30 without the headache: contractor charge accounts for paint stores](https://pub-5247264bd04e4ebeaecbbedb3bebb9f8.r2.dev/static/images/articles/contractor-charge-accounts-paint-stores-thumb.png) ### Net-30 without the headache: contractor charge accounts for paint stores Contractor charge accounts are the financial backbone of a paint store, and doing them right means house accounts, per-customer pricing, clean statements, real aging, and a way for painters to pay from their phone instead of the shoebox-and-spreadsheet workaround a general POS forces on you.](/insights/contractor-charge-accounts-paint-stores/index.md) [![Farm accounts, seasonal terms, and getting paid at harvest](https://pub-5247264bd04e4ebeaecbbedb3bebb9f8.r2.dev/static/images/articles/farm-charge-accounts-and-seasonal-terms-thumb.png) ### Farm accounts, seasonal terms, and getting paid at harvest How farm and feed stores run charge accounts on the growing calendar, from house accounts and per-customer pricing to statements, aging, and seasonal terms that let producers pay after harvest.](/insights/farm-charge-accounts-and-seasonal-terms/index.md) ## More paint stores on Rundoo [### AllPro Paint Atlanta, Georgia](/clients/allpro-paint/index.md) [![Alpine Design Co.](https://pub-5247264bd04e4ebeaecbbedb3bebb9f8.r2.dev/static/images/clients/alpine-design-co/go-live-day-signed-shirt.jpg) ### Alpine Design Co.
